Jantar Mantar Protests: The Indian Express reported that over 700 protesters, including former Delhi Chief Minister Atishi and AAP’s Saurabh Bhardwaj, were briefly detained by Delhi Police as tensions flared over voter roll revisions and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise.
Major demonstrations took place in Mumbai as well. These protesters  are demanding Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s removal.
ECI Special Enrollment Drive: Following intense scrutiny, the Election Commission of India ordered a special drive across 20 states to re-enroll eligible voters left out during the recent revision processes, after 13 crore names were dropped from draft rolls. The instruction was conveyed in writing on September 29 and repeated at a video conference with all state Chief Electoral Officers on Thursday.
Ladakh Border Mapping: The central government formally updated official maps to explicitly mark 28 strategic locations and Line of Actual Control (LAC) friction points in Ladakh, to counter China’s territorial claims.
This cartographic step counters China’s practice of unilaterally renaming places in disputed border sectors like Arunachal Pradesh and eastern Ladakh.
Gandhi Jayanti Tributes: According to NDTV, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu paid floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat on his birth anniversary. The day is also observed globally as the International Day of Non-Violence. Assam launched a Bamboo-framed bicycle made using bamboo sourced locally in Assam. It was launched at the Bramhaputra Riverfront on Gandhi Jayanti.
Flydubai Hero Pilot: Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke via video call with Indian Captain Smit Machchhar, praising his exceptional bravery for thwarting a mid-air cockpit attack by a co-pilot on an Israel-bound Flydubai flight. Israeli officials also lauded the intervention for averting a major disaster.

Fly Dubai attack: A Flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv was diverted to Saudi Arabia on Wednesday after one pilot stabbed the other and “apparently tried to crash the plane”, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said. He is being questioned by Saudi authorities, according to Netanyahu.

And both sides weigh escalation and diplomatic engagement.
Iran war and Rising Fuel Costs:
The European Union “fully rejects” a US demand to release emergency diesel stocks as the fuel’s price soars in America and elsewhere amid the war with Iran. President Trump and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent urged European allies to immediately release strategic diesel reserves to help lower domestic US fuel costs ahead of midterm elections.
British police arrested a dual UK-Iranian national in connection with a security investigation at an RAF air base in England. He has been arrested on the suspicion of preparation of terrorist acts. The 25-year-old man was arrested in Westminster, London.
Russia and Ukraine:
Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that Moscow prefers to end the conflict in Ukraine through dialogue and diplomacy, after it suffers record casualties. The new record comes after Russian casualties of about 40,000 a month since June, and is close to the goal Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy set in January of 50,000 Russian casualties a month. Russia reportedly lost 2,090 troops on September 28 – its highest 24-hour casualty rate of the war.
An avalanche on Mount Himlung in Nepal resulted in 15 deaths among workers preparing a Himalayan camp. HEAL THE WORLD

Who loses when the government turns away from public education at the grassroots?

The answer is obvious. The financially weakest and the most socially vulnerable look at the government for educating their wards.

Women, Dalits, Adivasis, and religious minorities benefit the most from robust publicly funded educational institutions. It is not for nothing that the previous governments in Andhra Pradesh and Delhi led by Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy and Arvind Kejriwal, respectively, tried to revive government-funded schools. That they could change the landscape of government schools, introduce massive structural reforms in terms of the syllabus, language of instruction, and see a massive increase in the enrolment rates of kids in these schools proves that when governments provide these institutions with the required support, they flourish.

What is interesting is that schemes such as the Amma Vodi, launched by the Reddy government are easy to implement and their impact is measurable. The Andhra Pradesh government has allocated around four billion dollars on buttressing education and health at the grassroots since 2020.

What happens when there is no government support?

For all the laudable things that the Reddy  government initiated in the government schools, it merely took a shift in YSR Congress Party’s political fortunes to erase these initiatives. For starters, the YSRCP government didn’t focus on recruitment of teachers at the government schools.

His government, through the District Selection Committee (DSC), recruited around 6,000 teachers months before the 2024 elections. The TDP made teacher recruitment a poll issue and announced that it would fill the vacant positions within months of coming to power. They announced a recruitment drive for teachers under the DSC, which opened up 16,347 posts in April 2025. That close to 580,000 youngsters applied for these positions made these selections competitive.

Meanwhile, the Chandrababu Naidu government, after coming to power in 2024, announced a slew of rollbacks. It recalled the policy that made English the only medium of instruction, disaffiliated over 1,000 government schools from the Central Board of Secondary Education, and stopped classes that prepared students for international language tests such as the Test of English as a Foreign Language.

The DSC itself became controversial as the established processes were abandoned. While the DSC has become the site of political dogfight between the YSRCP and the TDP – and by extension their affiliated press corps and a bouquet of private channels – it is interesting to note a few things.

Some prominent businessmen who made their fortune by providing paid education in Andhra Pradesh seem to be a part of the TDP network. K. Narayana, founder of the now pan-India Narayana chain of schools, is a prominent minister in the current Andhra Pradesh cabinet. Lavu Sri Krishnadevaryalu, the chairman of Vignan University, is a Member of Parliament. M. Sribharat, the Member of Parliament representing Visakhapatnam, inherited GITAM University with its multiple campuses. Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar, the member of parliament representing Guntur, and the minister of state for rural development, made his fortunecoaching medicos to prepare for license tests. Recently, Bhashyam Ramakrishna, the founder of the Bhashyam schools, was nominated to the Rajya Sabha. That private businessmen who grew rich selling education are well-represented in the TDP’s innermost coterie seems to be a moot point.

But would these individuals have benefitted from a well-supported, publicly funded education system?

MONEY MATTERS

Collections have now remained above Rs 2 lakh crore since July, when revenues stood at Rs 2.11 lakh crore, followed by Rs 2.00 lakh crore in August and Rs 2.04 lakh crore in September. • Sectoral Pressure: Auto and financial services facing sharp corrections due to mixed earnings data and global headwinds.

At the midpoint of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021–2030) and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework’s 2030 targets, Restoration Day will bring together government leaders, United Nations representatives, Indigenous Peoples, local communities, youth, scientists, investors and restoration practitioners to mark this milestone and chart the road ahead.

Building on two hugely popular editions at CBD COP15 (Montreal) and COP16 (Cali), this year’s Restoration Day will launch the first-ever Restoration Progress Report, a landmark assessment of where the world stands on restoring 30% of degraded ecosystems and delivering on the 1 billion hectare commitment.

The opening day of the Rio Conventions Pavilion (RCP) addressed the theme of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. Sessions examined relevant global frameworks, processes, and stakeholders that are necessary to address this multi-faceted area, which speakers underlined will not only solve climate change and biodiversity loss challenges but contribute to sustained economic growth as well.

In the opening session of the day, the UN’s First Ten World Restoration Flagships were announced, spanning 23 countries with the objective of producing diverse examples of ecosystem restoration.

Lucy Mulenkei, Indigenous Information Network and Co-Chair, UN Decade Advisory Board, called for the participation of Indigenous Peoples in ecosystem restoration solutions.

Christiane Paulus, Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection, Germany, stressed the different ways Germany is committed to restoration including investing 40 million euros in the UN Multi-Partner Trust Fund, which will direct significant funding to the newly announced flagship programme.

Maria Helena Semedo, Deputy Director-General, Food and Agricultural Organization of the UN (FAO) explained how every dollar invested in restoration efforts will generate USD 30 in benefits and how FAO is leading a monitoring task force composed of 200 experts to measure progress.

The day brought together a range of engagements, including:

  • A high-level launch of the Restoration Progress Report, with reactions from Parties and partners.
  • An interactive dialogue where participants help shape the next five years of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.
  • Panel discussions on restoration science, cross-convention synergies, monitoring, and finance for scale.
  • Community-led sessions spotlighting restoration led by Indigenous Peoples, local communities and youth.

A closing celebration: the Gala of Hope – Nature Edition, awarding new UN World Restoration Flagships, followed by a networking reception.
