Anuradha Kasitha is a poet, an author and runs a creative writing program for children, both in person and virtually. We had a very interesting conversation with an ardent bird watcher who likes to pen her thoughts on mundane, everyday beauty and seeks and shares her joy through her verses and prose. Anuradha has been a creative writing mentor for the past ten years. She is an avid reader and enjoys writing. Anuradha is a nature lover and spiritual seeker. She believes poetry is one of the best mediums to elevate the human spirit.

Tell us about your childhood.

My childhood was different from that of the children in India of the 80s, since I grew up in Muscat, Oman. Life was quiet and comfortable. It gave me the opportunity to read, absorb, and learn at my pace.

How did books play an integral role in your life?

I’ve always had a love for reading and would get most excited about visiting a bookshop. Since books were expensive in Muscat, I would wait for my annual trip to India to build my stack. My worldview and understanding of the world around me developed because of my reading habit.

What led you to start dancing fireflies-your creative writing program ?

The creative writing program that I developed is titled “Dancing Fireflies”. Earlier, I ran book clubs for children because I was always passionate about getting children to read. Later, organically, it developed into a creative writing program. More so since I enjoy writing myself and have been writing poetry since middle school.

Can creative writing be taught ?

Creative writing can definitely be taught. Having said this, the talent to write is mostly inborn. However, through consistent practice, everyone can learn to write to the best of their abilities.

Who are your favourite authors ?

My favourite authors are one too many, but my favorite book of all time is Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. It has been since I first read the abridged version in grade 5 or 6. The protagonist, Jane, is inspiring in her resilience, equanimity, honesty, and forthrightness. I can reread this book any time, and she’s the character I would like to be.

How important is reading the newspapers for teenagers ?

Reading newspapers is of great importance for teens, to keep them abreast of the national and international news, and widen their intellect.

Do you feel reading books has lessened ?

Sadly, reading has lessened due to the high prevalence and usage of social media.

What can you suggest to motivate people to read more books ?

Reading begins at home at an early age. Parents need to put in that effort and surround their children with books during the early years.
