In September 2010 Bishnu Shrestha, a 35 year Gurkha soldier was on the Maurya Express train. He was going from Ranchi to Gorakhpur after he retired from the Indian Army. Something bad happened near Chittaranjan, West Bengal. A big group of robbers they had guns and knives took over the train. They wanted to steal from the people on the train and hurt them.

Bishnu Shrestha was sleeping,. He woke up when he heard the noise. He was ready to give the robbers his things so they would not hurt him.. Then he saw the robbers grab a young girl who was sitting with her parents. The robbers wanted to hurt the girl badly. Bishnu Shrestha knew he had to do something. He took out his khukuri knife. Fought the robbers.

The fight was very bad. Bishnu Shrestha used his knife to hurt the robbers. He hurt at three of them very badly. Some people said that three robbers died and eight more were hurt. The robbers shot at Bishnu Shrestha. They missed him. He was bleeding and very tired so he dropped his knife. The robbers took the knife. Hurt Bishnu Shresthas hand very badly.

Even though Bishnu Shrestha was hurt badly he stopped the robbers from hurting the young girl. The robbers ran away, from the train. Left a lot of things they had stolen. The police caught some of the robbers. Took their guns and stolen things. Bishnu Shrestha had to go to the hospital for two months to get his hand fixed. The Indian government said thank you to Bishnu Shrestha for being very brave. Bishnu Shrestha and the Maurya Express train and the robbers will always be remembered for what happened that day. The Indian Army and Bishnu Shrestha are very proud of what he did to save the girl.
