Dev Ramprasad is a non-verbal artist blessed with Down’s syndrome, who began painting at the age of eight. Deeply inspired by nature and western classical music–based videos of renowned artists, he found his truest expression through art. Guided by his teacher, he learned to explore textures using brushes, sponges, knives, and tissues, creating vibrant works that reflect the divinity of nature itself. Dev enjoys good food, traveling, and music on his iPad. Winner of the Kalajyoti Award for Inclusive Artist 2025, he continues to inspire through his art, proving creativity needs no words. Dev’s creativity comes alive through his work at Hippy Turtle. His one heartfelt wish is to share his art more widely, spreading inspiration and inclusivity through his creative journey. When did you realise his neuro divergence ? At birth. We were told to get genetic testing done by the doctor to confirm Downs Syndrome

How was his school and childhood different and similar to others ? From his point of view he had a lovely childhood full of love, fun , music and adventure. His developmental milestones were delayed but he got to crawl, walk etc. eventually. He is non verbal but expresses himself through gestures and vocalisations. When he turned 8, he started expressing himself beautifully through art.

What kind of art does he like to paint? He uses acrylic on canvas as the paint dries very easily. He using his fingers, both his hands, and various tools like sponge, brush, knife etc. to create art. His style is similar to impressionistic style of art.

Who are his favourite artists and does he have a muse? He loves Van Gogh. His work is deeply influenced by nature.

What are his favourite mediums ? Acrylic on Canvas

How challenging is it for differently abled people to find acceptance? The challenge is on the part of the neurotypical people who find it difficult to accept differences. Since society wants them to behave the same way as they do, this is where the challenge lies. The neurodiverse individual, on the other hand, has no such difficulty. They accept and move on.

What does hippy turtle mean? Dev is like the turtle- slow and steady wins the race. We wanted to use the word “happy turtle” for his website but that name was already taken so we chose “hippy turtle “.

How did the idea of the store and website come about? Dev has been exhibiting his works since a very young age. A few years ago we decided to create a few good quality products based on his art and started exhibiting them at stalls in various markets and society fares. We faced difficulties in displaying everything he had done at such venues hence the need for a store to display his art and artware properly. A few months before opening the store we started his website so his art and products would be available online.

How do we encourage diversity and acceptance ? By leading by example. You cannot tell others to follow your expectations , however, you can transform your way of being. That’s all it takes. Does Inclusion exist ? Yes, very much so. True inclusion is co-existence and not everyone being able to do the same things.

What support do parents and family of differently abled individuals need? Depending on social and economic status , some may need financial assistance. Every family needs state support in terms of the city where the child lives to be equipped with public infrastructure and schools, equipped to cater to the needs of neurodiverse individuals. Society also needs to support the families in their struggles to raise a differently abled child so there should be more awareness and empathy. Close family members and friends should also show the same level of compassion and acceptance as they expect for themselves.

How easy or challenging is it for them in India vs rest of the world? India is an emerging world where things are still flexible and there is significantly less loneliness than abroad so mental health is less of an issue overall for the general population. This is a better culture to raise the differently abled. Specially when they have outgrown the school age and are looking for assisted living communities as a lifelong option. It is easier to find house help for the neurodiverse population in india as well.

Lastly, Dev do share the road ahead for hippy turtle . HippyTurtle is an attempt to spread the message of inclusion and creativity in the world. It is also a part of my identity and contribution to society. I also get enabled financially by this venture. Till I’m able or inclined I shall continue this venture and let it evolve like me.
