Driving is not just about moving a vehicle

Every time someone gets behind the wheel, they make a choice- not just about where they are

going, but about how carefully they will protect the lives around them. Think about the last time you were in a car. Maybe you were on your way to school or coming back from a family outing. You were sitting in the back seat, watching the city blur past the window, buildings, people, other cars etc. It all looked ordinary. But here is something that might surprise you – in India, every three minutes, someone is seriously injured on the road. Every four minutes, someone dies.

That is not a traffic problem. It is a human problem- When people learn to drive, they focus on the obvious things like, how to steer, when to brake, what the traffic signals mean. All of that is important, of course. But real driving goes much deeper than pressing pedals and turning a wheel. Real driving means understanding that a car is not just a machine. It is a responsibility. A car moving at 60 km/h carries the power to end a life in the fraction of a second.

ROAD SAFETY AWARENESS, SATWIK SATHI MEMORIAL FOUNDATION

Imagine you are playing cricket in a park. You know the rules- no bowling at the face, stop if someone gets hurt, watch where the ball is going. Those rules exist not because cricket is dangerous, but because when you play with others, their safety becomes your responsibility. Driving is exactly the same. So, what does responsible driving actually look like?

It is the driver who does not check their phone at a red light. It is the one who slows down near a school gate, even if they are late. It is the person who lets a pedestrian cross, even when there is no zebra crossing. These choices save lives. More than 80% of road accident deaths in India are preventable. T It means they did can be avoided. A small moment of carelessness, a moment of speed, a moment of distraction – these are the real causes of most crashes. Not bad luck. You might be thinking: “I am ten years old. I do not drive”. That is true. But you are an integral part of road safety. You are a pedestrian every single day. You cross streets, you ride in cars, you cycle to tuitions and the choices you make right now are building habits that will stay with you forever. Always use the footpath. Look both ways before crossing, even on a one-way road. Wear a helmet on a bicycle or scooter, every single time.

Ask your parents to put their phones away when they drive. Remind your uncle to wear a seatbelt.
